Coping With Fibroid Pain
Fibroids are a very common complaint amongst women. Around 30 percent of women will suffer at some point in their lives from fibroids that are large enough to cause symptoms. Some of the symptoms can cause pain that ranges from mild to chronic. Treatment for fibroids will depend on many factors such as severity of symptoms, the woman's age and general health. Some women find that mild pain can be controlled with over the counter pain relief. In more severe cases, surgery is often required.
Causes Of Fibroid Pain
Women with fibroids usually have periods that last longer and are much heavier than usual. This heavy bleeding may also lead to anemia and exhaustion. Fibroids that grow very large can put pressure on the pelvic area. Sometimes the shape of the uterus will become distorted and press against other organs.
Symptoms
Constipation - the pressure caused by large fibroids can lead to constipation. A high fiber diet will help reduce the symptoms. Eat whole grain foods that are high in fiber such as cereals, legumes, fruit and vegetables. Drink plenty of water.
Pain during sexual activity - a common problem for fibroid sufferers is pain during sexual intercourse. This can be very stressful and introduce strain into a couple's relationship. The pain often occurs when pressure is being applied to the abdomen or when the fibroid is pressed on during penetration. Couples should experiment to find different positions that are more comfortable. Good communication between couples is important and sufferers shouldn't be afraid to seek help from a doctor if the problem persists.
Menorrhagia - this is heavy menstrual bleeding. Fibroids can cause cycles that last up to eight days longer than a normal cycle. Many women with fibroids suffer from severe cramping and back/abdominal pain.
Treatments
Pain medication - over-the-counter pain relief such as Aspirin, Tylenol and Advil are useful for milder symptoms. They can be used to relieve cramps, menstrual pain and back pain. Heat pads can also be useful when placed on painful areas. If these drugs are not effective, advice should be sought from a medical practitioner.
Natural pain relief - there are many options available to women within the sphere of alternative therapies. Ranging from hypnosis to acupuncture and herbal medicines, some women find great benefits in a more holistic approach to fibroid pain.
Stress reduction - stress and tension can cause an increase in pain levels. Using stress reduction techniques on a daily basis can help with pain management. These can include breathing exercises and meditation.
