Menopause...Naturally

Before jumping on the medical bandwagon and asking a doctor to prescribe you something for your menopause symptoms, it is important to look into natural menopause treatments. While these natural suggestions may not work for everyone, they certainly can't hurt; and they just might be the thing that helps you with your symptoms.

You Are What You Eat

Your diet can influence your menopause symptoms a great deal. Avoid high amounts of caffeine and carbonated drinks which can increase bone loss through the phosphorous in them. Be careful of eating meats and chicken that contain high amounts of saturated fats, as they decrease the body's ability to metabolize estrogen. Watch your sugar intake as it hurts the liver's ability to metabolize estrogen and can hurt the immune system. You should, however, increase your use of soy, grains, oats, wheat, brown rice, tofu, almonds, cashews and fruits and vegetables. Soy, in particular, is said to be a natural remedy for menopause. It is suggested to take 50 mg of soy isoflavones each day and combine it with 30 grams of soy protein each day from food.

Interesting Dietary Supplements & Herbs

One dietary supplement that is readily available over-the-counter is red clover isoflavone supplements. They can be taken as Promensil in 40 mg doses a day. Researchers have found that this supplement can decrease the incident of hot flashes and reduce night sweats. In addition, some pharmacists and natural medicine providers recommend 20 to 60 mg of Black Cohosh three times a day. Women who have experienced surgical menopause may not find this as helpful, however, as those who have had natural menopause. Black Cohosh is said to help with hot flashes, heart palpitations, painful periods, migraines and anxiety.

Vitamins

Certain vitamins may help the body to stay strong during menopause and may help to prevent or weaken symptoms. Vitamins that might be important during menopause include Vitamin E to help with hot flashes and night sweats; Calcium to keep bones strong; Magnesium for the absorption of calcium; and Vitamin C to help absorb Vitamin E and decrease capillary fragility. You might consider taking Vitamin D, folic acid, Vitamin K and selenium as well. Many multi-vitamins will have these vitamins in them. Ask a doctor before taking vitamins, as you certainly don't want to overdo it or take the wrong dosages.

Hopefully, these natural remedies for menopause will help to decrease your symptoms and to make you feel better. Some women also recommend interesting alternative treatments including pilates, yoga, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and more. Look into all of your options before starting a medical treatment and see if you can't help your body to gently move through this period in your life.
