Overcoming a Weight Loss Plateau
When you first started your weight loss routine, you may have noticed that you began losing weight more quickly than you had expected. Once you’ve settled into your diet and fitness routine, you may begin to notice that your weight loss has slowed down considerably or even come to a halt. While this can feel discouraging, it’s actually quite normal!
If you’ve reached a plateau in your weight loss journey, here are a few tips to help you get back on track:
Ramp Up The Intensity
In the beginning, your workout routine was probably quite challenging. You may have ended your workout feeling tired and a bit sore. Over time, workouts gradually become easier as we build strength and stamina. Often, one of the easiest ways to break through a weight loss plateau is to increase the intensity of our workouts. Add a little more distance to your run or increase the amount of weight you are lifting to improve your results.
Examine Your Diet
As we lose weight and become fit, our dietary needs can change. Weight loss can slow down our metabolism, so if you continue to consume the same number of calories that you did to start you may see your results decrease. Take a look at your diet, and make sure you haven’t unintentionally increased the number of calories you are consuming. You may just need to cut back a bit on the amount of calories you are consuming. Don’t make any drastic cuts, because that can lead to you feeling hungry and overindulging on snacks. Instead, focus on eating nutrient-dense foods in sensible portions.
Add More Activity
To keep your weight loss on-track, consider adding some physical activity outside of the gym. Getting up and moving throughout the day will burn additional calories and even give you an energy boost. Take a break during the work day to walk around the office, or go for a walk after dinner each day. The key is to find activities that you enjoy, so you’re adding a mini-workout that doesn’t feel like work!
If you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss, there’s no need to get discouraged. In fact, reaching a plateau can be a sign that you are on your way to reaching your goals. With a few simple adjustments to your routine, you’ll be back on the path to lasting success!
